ABOUT

Tara is fascinated by the power of language to share the places and stories that move us most. Her love of wide expanses began as a child in the cornfields of eastern Iowa and continues to guide all her pursuits. She received an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles and spent 15 years working in Greenland, Antarctica, and Canada for the US Polar Programs and Polar Bears International. An excerpt from her memoir-in-progress won the 2026 Tucson Festival of Books Literary Award in nonfiction.

Her prose and poetry have been published with Alpinist, Patagonia, The Maine Review, The Calendula Review, and Waymaking: An Anthology of Women’s Adventure Writing, Poetry and Art. She is the nonfiction editor at Whitefish Review, has worked as an editor for USAID projects, and teaches writing to US Forest Service avalanche forecasters and as faculty at Montana State University. She spends most other time trail running, climbing, and paddling in quiet places wherever she finds them. Tara is based in Montana with her longtime love, Nick.
